Hazel R. Schwerin, 93, of Sumner, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Susan Friedrich officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 7th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumnerand for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be made in her name to St. John Lutheran Church or the Sumner Public Library.
Hazel Ruth, daughter of Arthur and Louisa Sieck Frisch, was born April 12, 1921, at Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sumner and received her education in the Banks Township #5 School in Fayette County. On April 8, 1951, she was united in marriage with Edwin E. Schwerin at the E.U.B. Church in Sumner. The couple farmed in the Spring Fountain area, near Sumner and Hazel was a devoted housewife and mother. They moved to town in 1979, and following Edwin’s death in May of 1999, Hazel continued to live in their home until entering the Hillcrest Home in October of 2009. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, and enjoyed going to the library, gardening, and painting.
Hazel is survived by two sons, Douglas Arthur Luitjen of Houston, Texas and Randall Edwin (Carla) Schwerin of Sumner; one grandson, Roderick S. (Jeri) Luitjen, two great grandchildren, Kali Ona and Jobi Lee; and one step granddaughter, Leona Schlatter.
In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Eldon Frisch; and two sisters, Edna Gudzus and Elsie Bixby.
